Had a grand ol time trying to get from Nob Hill back to the Mission on Saturday. Ended up waiting 40 minutes for the 27 to show up. During the course of my wait I saw no less 5 people give up hope of the bus ever arriving and just wander off after waiting 20 minutes or so. I can’t imagine why more people don’t ride Muni…
Once a bus did show up things got a lot better though. The bus driver apologized for being so behind schedule and was really efficient the rest of the trip to make up for being late. Oh wait that’s not true at all. The bus driver didn’t say shit and in fact, the trip took 40 fucking minutes. The whopping 1.8 mile trip only took me an hour and 20 minutes to complete including wait time. Lets look at the efficiency shall we?
So average speed of travel: 1.8 miles divided by 1.33 hours gives us an average speed of 1.35 miles per hour. Gold star for muni!
Maybe I am being a little rough on Muni; I did include the wait time in that calculation. So lets just use the time I was actually on the bus which works out to a lightning quick…2.7 miles an hour. Basically what this means is unless you are a one-legged, blind octogenarian your lazy ass can probably walk about as fast as Muni can drive you there.
Just for fun lets compare the speed of muni to the average cruising speed of a few common critters:
Slugs .018 mph
Sloth .15 mph
Manatee 3 mph
Elephant 4.5 mph
House fly 4.5 mph
Wolf 5 mph
Good work Muni you’re way faster then slugs and sloths, but sadly the lightning quick manatee does manage to beat you out in the time trials and elephants…well elephants really smoked you. So remember everyone if you’re standing on the corner waiting for the 27 and see a manatee swim by, hop on; it will probably get you to your destination faster then the Muni.

Yeah man, it takes me 30 minutes to walk 1.8 miles, same amount of time it takes me to ride the 49 the same distance (if it comes at all), it smells better AND I’m down a pant size since I gave up on muni.

Anybody *attempted* to ride the metro lately? A couple weekends ago, i had a class at State, and my plan was to arrive early in order to get some coffee, a bagel perhaps, and do some studying…what the hell possessed me to think that was going to happen?
You know our beloved transit system is working like a well-oiled machine when you leave two hours early, then wait for an M for a good hour and a half, only to have one pull up packed tightly with shopping-bag toting tourists–we’re talking possible shortage of oxygen here.
After those of us foolish enough to remain on the platform that long have squeezed aboard, effectively filling the last tiny bit of space, an elderly Asian woman has the notion that she can fit aboard too, which to my incredulity, she does, albeit shoving her way aboard.
The funny part is, at Civic Center, the man in the wheelchair at the back of the train announces he needs to get off, which results in those of us near the door strong-arming the people on the platform away so dude can get off. The aforementioned Asian woman, however, won’t be moved, fighting her way back onto the bus, and actually leaping over wheelchair guy. “She’s a survivor,” someone next to me says with sardonic chuckle.
i suppose it’s too much to ask for perhaps two trains to run every two hours?
